Wherein I unexpectedly get motivated

Today, I organized my room, weeded my flower bed, bought new shoes for boy5, painted the hall (finally), and made banana whoopie pies.

First, about the shoes....Last night, we were at a baptismal feast shortly after a thundershower. Boy5 loves mud. And water. He went through 2 outfits while there and the 2 outfits and sneakers are still there. (This is what happens when you have a lot of help putting everything in the van--it's easy to assume it all got there and not check.) Lucien had been saying S needed new shoes anyway so this morning seemed a good time. I think the old shoes were 4s maybe 5s. Imagine my disgust with myself when I measured his foot and he measured into a 7! Granted they are a little loose, but still....

The hall looks so good! I used the bathroom color but mixed in some white. Now it is actually the color I had really wanted. Tomorrow, we'll do the doors and frames and then maybe take a picture? I think the camera batteries need charging so we'll see.

We have not made whoopie pies in about 9 years--not kidding, and even then, Lucien had made them and always chocolate ones. My mom sent me a church cookbook not too long ago and it had the recipe for banana ones. I changed it a little--butter instead of cr*sco (yuck) and since I had no nuts, I threw in some oats. YUM! So easy, too. I made them while fixing dinner. Let me know if you'd like the recipe.

I tried the lattice thing from the lil girl's hair website previously mentioned. I did 2 rows of that and pulled it into a braid. It was cute but I should try thinner rows and make it 3 next time and not before bed. She doesn't like too much in her hair at bed time. One simple braid to keep the snarls out and she's happy.

Ladies in Red

Lucien wanted to do a little photo shoot of us because of the flowers behind us. Same ones as last year with the lambs, remember?
Lucien got stung yesterday and his ear is red and swollen today. It's his fault really. The bees are usually fine and leave us alone but they hate being swatted at.
It's been a busy weekend and next weekend is looking that way. Fireworks Friday, pianoman's gun shoot Saturday... finally!

Welcome to our fort...

Last night we were at a folk dance. Looks like fun, doesn't it? I got oldest to dance finally and have proof but the proof is blurry. I'm not sure why my camera is messing up lately. Ack.
This is the fort. There will be sand in the bottom. We have plans for the roof. The wood is all scraps that was in the garage so the only expense was screws. It may not be pretty but it works and the children are happy.

Sparky has gone and hauled her 3 off somewhere. Bad cat.
One hive is doing very well. The other has apparently lost the queen so we ordered a new one.
Oh, I heard of a blog that has little girl hair-styles to try http://shedoeshair.blogspot.com/

Job description for princess?

Boy4: Here, you can use this to kill the dragon.

Princess: I'm a princess! YOU kill the dragon!

Cats and kids

Just call me Toola Roola

It's on my 'little pony' sticker that princess gave me. Well, more like ordered to put on-so it's on my shirt. It's a good name for me I think. Especially after I've been thru S*ms Club and Wallyworld today. My head is still spinning. Here are a few reasons why I might go nuts if Lucien ever gets a job working from home:

1. I really do know that the bathroom floor is slippery when wet. I've washed the floor how many hundreds of times when he isn't here and managed to live and live well. ;0)

2. It's great that he still thinks I'm attractive but hearing how my backside looks while I'm washing the toilet REALLY is annoying.

3. Yes, I know that the children can be chaotic at times. Yes, I know saying something for the thousandth time to one of them is frustrating. Yes, children need lots of reminding. Yes, they are totally normal.

4. Emptying grocery bags and placing everything on the kitchen counter or table is not helpful.

5. Men tend to take over the household chores in order to make sure they've done enough in one day or something like that. It's that 'need to conquer' thing.

In short, please pray Lucien gets a manly type job that satisfies his longing to conquer away from my jurisdiction really soon.

By the way, Lucky has the cutest kittens ever once again. Pianoman found them yesterday and we relocated them from tall grass in a pasture to a bin on the porch. Lucky seems to think this was a great move as they are old enough for her to have to chase already. They are SO sweet! They'd never seen the children before and yet within minutes were letting them cuddle and pet and all. I'll put up pics later. If you are counting, this means we have 2 sets of 3 kittens--or 6 total. They'll be great mousers if you are interested. Outdoor cats that are great mousers and still friendly are hard to find (but there are 6 here-- hint, hint).

Of swings and flowers

He's a hard worker!

I can't believe how well he balances at 16 months! My others couldn't use a big swing this early!
It helps that it's low--he can stop it and get off.

We're hoping to build a tower with sandbox underneath to the left of the swingset. Lucien is working on firewood today but maybe later this week. It seems that none of his possible next jobs want to start up until after the 4th. In the meantime we're getting a lot done--the garage is organized and there's plenty of wood in there to use for the tower.

This is the most beautiful hanging plant I've bought.

Apparently I'm not the only one who thinks so. That is a nest and it is not making my flowers happy. It'll likely not be so beautiful for much longer....

All right, we admit it....

There are things about the Keira Knightley P&P that we enjoy after all (happy now, Kerri? lol). We remain Colin F*rth fans all the way and like his P&P the best (Pride and Prejudice), we're just admitting that the other is not as much like watching a car crash as we first thought.

We also watched August R*sh this weekend and that was a sweet movie.

My chickens are starting to lay better again. It may be that they were just affected by the heat while we were away. I think yesterday the count was 11 eggs which is way better than 4. I do not like feeding 19 chickens and only getting 4 eggs. Something way OFF about that!

If anyone is interested in a quick, balanced read about courtship, Her Hand in Marriage by Doug W1lson is really good.

On being counter culture

When we are here, on our slightly secluded 3 acres, just us, I tend to forget how strange we are. I think going to Maine reminded me.

When people ask us why we moved here, it's easy to say: the weather or family integrated church or that Maine is just too cold. But the bottom line is that being who we are, being 'counter culture' was too hard where we were. It is difficult to stand alone for something as an adult and we didn't like asking it of our children. Here, they can be and know that we are not the only odd ones and even sometimes feel that we are actually normal. Here, there are times we feel like a 'small' family! Here, we can talk of courtship and believe it is possible. Here, there is no pressure to excel at this or that temporal thing--we are able to strive to excel at what matters eternally.

I do not say much usually about these things because I do not want anyone to feel they must do as we do. We are the family God has led us to be. We are not perfect and likely we sin at least hourly. We repent and ask God to help us continue. And that's all. But there are a few things we believe in strongly that makes us very odd and we know it.

We believe a family can do well on one income and that wives are called by God to be in the home. (Titus 2) We believe that our children are our responsibility to bring up, teach, love, train, etc. (Deut. 6:6-9) We believe in worshiping weekly as a family and weekly Lord's Supper. (Acts 2:42) Because of the former, we do not do clubs, Sunday Schools, etc. We teach our children God's Word ourselves daily. Well, even mostly twice daily we meet for prayer and reading and memorization.

You see all this has led to so much more. Our children have not been pressured to have dating relationships. Our children have not been pressured to do or be much of anything other than what they want to be. It's very odd. It's very interesting. I remember, as a child, saying "I can't wait until ____." Now, I'm not saying my children never say this. They often look forward to really special things like going to Maine, but mostly they can find something special in every day. Even when mom makes them do math....

Since we are always doing things as a family or as a family with other families, there is no pressure to date. We know personally at least 5 couples who have courted and married. And they are happy. At present, my sons look up to the young men who have done this and plan to do so themselves.

That said, if my sons decide one day courtship isn't for them--we will love them anyway! I guess I just want to point out that while all the world around us seems to believe that being chaste, pure is no longer possible---with God, all things ARE possible.

That and this and the other

When we left for Maine, we left behind Lucky our cat who seemed to be hugely expecting. We returned and she seemed to be expecting no more and there seems to be evidence of nurslings but we can not find the kittens. Yesterday, during breakfast Lassie began barking at something near the cage thing we used to transport Piggy to the butcher last fall.

Of course, the children love any excuse to run out on meal times lately and boy3 was first on the scene. He suspected kittens and kittens he found. I went out also with a towel and had him hand them to me. There are three. One all black and two gray tigerish sorts. I tried to move them to the porch only it became increasingly clear that these were NOT Lucky's kittens. Firstly, they were way too young. Secondly, any kitten of Lucky's would be somewhat fluffy and at least one should appear vaguely yellow-ish.

We decided to put them back where they were found and block any way for Lassie to get to them. Lucien went out to spy some time later and there was Sparky happily feeding her kittens. We never even suspected her. She's a thin, wiry cat. How she hid carrying three kittens--I'm sure most of us would love to know!

Anyway, she's very proud and much friendlier than usual. I wonder why becoming a momma cat does that to our cats?

We were gifted with a wooden swingset yesterday. Lucien and the boys went to take it apart and moved it here and the children are greatly enjoying it. I'd wanted one for so long and it's just amazing that it became available when Lucien was also available. God's timing and provisions are beyond marvelous. I got some cute pictures of baby 'helping' re-assemble it. If uploading were quicker......

Luicen's job hunt is going ok. Please pray for something at least under 3 hours away. He was 6-7 hours away in Maryland and under 3 would seem like nothing. We are still aware that there is a big job that should open up very soon that is under 1 hour away however we need something in the meantime. He has been made one offer but it is 4 hours away and would start him on Monday so I'm hoping something else appears by Friday.

We're having beautiful, mild weather this week. Spending a lot of time outside!

The dress

First, please check out Tony's post at Sand in the Gears about meal time at his house (he's in my list of links). Way too funny, yet amazingly accurate. (He's got some boys also.)

Here's the dress Grammy sent home with us. I do not think I hemmed the pinafore enough. Might fix it later. She's looking so big. Where does the time go?

There was a shot with the bonnet, but it will not upload.....

Back to Life, Back to Reality....

Oops, I think that is another song title on my post title.... I just can't seem to help myself.

I was sick on Wednesday and Thursday. I thought it would be great I guess to lose all the vacation weight I acquired being fed so much good food and not having to actually cook it myself. Unfortunately, now that I'm feeling better--I'm so very hungry. Oh well.

On Friday, we decided it was way past time to plant the garden. We've done it this late before but this year due to rising food/gas prices--everyone is planting I suppose. There was not much left. We did manage to find and plant most everything we usually plant. I think we are missing beets. If you have any extra, send them our way please. ;0) I also added a bit to the flower garden. The guys caught up the lawn mowing and it looks really great out there now between the flowers, the plants and the lawn.

My chickens are not laying well and they are trying to eat their eggs. It is seriously making me nuts. I'm ready to put a few in the stew pot. I know we can get some wooden eggs and once they've tried to peck them a few times--they'll quit but how to figure out who is not laying well? hmmm. I would like to order a new batch of layers next month. Easier to brood when it's hot out.

Yesterday, I hemmed princess' new dress from Grammy. (I took a picture of her in today. I'll try to post it tomorrow.) We also signed up for the summer reading program at the library. They'll be having a Pirate Science activity. I just can't wait. Boy3 is looking forward to the fossils activity.

Boy3 and boy4 are off from school until next month. Probably start again after the 4th. The 2 oldest need to finish up a few things so will start again tomorrow. I have given them until August. I still can't believe I have 2 finishing up 9th grade. Didn't I just finish 9th grade? I suppose not since some guy I graduated with keeps emailing to see if I'm coming to our class reunion in August. 20 years. I wonder should I tell him I just went to Maine and I'm not going back just for that. No road trips over 5 hours or so for a while. (I'd love to get over to Williamsburg in the fall.)

This week I hope to finish up some painting. Then maybe I'll post pictures of all the remodeling we've done.

all of them in jail.

Vacation Pics 2

I had a semi-good picture of Lucien and the children and the ma'tantes, but I find I do not feel right about posting it as I doubt they (the aunts) ever go 'on-line.' So, what is below is the pics from the beach and from the gathering of a few momys families in Waldoboro.
She's cold but wet anyway--she had a lot of fun running in and out.
Oldest and my camo guy looking for shells--princess running....
Baby digging.

I like this one a lot. I think I'll frame it like the one of Lucien and the 2 walking down our lane. What do you think?

Baby is saying Yep, it's my horse! But no, it isn't really.

Baby and a buddy. They are nearly the same age.
This one is cute I thought.

This was the sunset the night we got home. It was much more glorious in person. Great to be home!

Vacation Pics 1

Getting re-acquainted with Uncle M.
Me, princess, and my grandmother. (I wish my mom could've been in this one also but she was laid up the ENTIRE time we were there with a bad toe--she actually had part of it removed! ugh)
Oldest's 15th birthday party at Pepere's.
This one is just pretty.
Our babies and us.

Home Sweet Home

To really tell my story well, I need to start at the beginning and I'll just throw it all together. I may post pics later or tomorrow. We'll see.

The day before we left, Lucien took the mini-van to have the a/c charged or whatever it's called. They did this and found it was leaking so took the stuff all back out and to fix it would require 6.5 hrs and $900. The weather had been cool and we decided to skip it.

We spent most of our time in Maine visiting relatives and since Lucien's family is huge--t'was mostly them. ;0) The days remained cool--downright freezing at times. No problem. This past Friday, we went to Storyland in NH and I had hoped to get pics of the snow still atop Mt Washington, but it was rainy, foggy, drizzly--no pics of the mountain. We still had a great time. The children are wearing rain ponchos in most of my pics, but the lines were nearly non-existent and we were able to do nearly everything.

We had heard that Saturday would be warmer so we went to Lincolnville Beach on the way to a Momys gathering in Waldoboro. The children, in the beach pics, are wearing shorts and sweaters. Ha ha on me. Still, it was beyond lovely to see the ocean again and the Momys gathering was great fun.

Oh, I have forgotten to mention that several of us dealt with either a bad spring cold or allergies the entire vacation. Baby and I are still dealing--ugh. Poor baby. His appetite was horrid too. He has finally been trying to eat again yesterday and today.

On the way back to our friends' apartment (which they so graciously allowed us to use) on Saturday, Lucien decided that he and I MUST have lobster before heading back to VA so he picked up a couple. Yum. I'm glad he did that.

Sunday, we went to church with Lucien's father again and then to a breakfast at one of his aunt's homes. That was fun also but it was getting hot. 90 degrees. We decided to pack up and spend that evening at Aunt N's house. (She had offered and it was nice to spend our last evening there with family.) So. Back to the van. 90 degrees and no a/c.

Yesterday, we got an early start. By 10 am, it was stifling. By 2pm, any air reaching us in the back seat was hot. Hot breeze. And humid. Baby and I used a lot of water. Drinking and dousing. We made it to Scranton Pa at about 5pm and I got a good discount at Comfort Su1tes thanks to my HSLDA membership. Last night was really relaxing and cool.

This morning, our start was a bit later. We figured we didn't have so very far to go. At 10:30, it seemed a bit stifling. At 11:30 we stopped for lunch and I could not see how I could possibly make it another 300 miles if it was going to continue to be that hot. God is so good to us. We stopped again at 2:30 --still very hot, but shortly after we got back on the road it seemed a bit cooler and then the sun went away and some time later we ran into a t-shower. Ahhhh. So much better!

We've been home since about 4:30. It was great to get home and, unlike the last time we went to Maine, it seemed very much to be home this time. We really do like it here very much. I enjoyed seeing everyone and I do miss them and I enjoyed seeing the water--the lakes, the ponds, the streams, the ocean--but I do not miss black flies or mosquitoes. Before the last 2 weeks, I'd had only 1 mosquito bite in 3 years. ;0)

Thanks to everyone who fed us and visited with us! We miss you already!

We're having a great time!

We've been fed so much--we'll all be huge by the time we return! Lucien's 'three aunts' are so amazing! It's been great to see all the rellys again.

Everyone has had a slight cold, but doing well. We got to meet a fellow blogger from HSB (homeschool blog) last night. KayinMaine is her nick. I had a link to her on the old blog but haven't moved anyone from HSB over here. I'll try to another time. Anyway, it was a great time! Good food, good fellowship and the kids asked if we could go back before we'd even left so you know it went well! Thanks again K! (they even sent us away with some of their home made maple syrup--yum!)

I'm getting back to the rellys! We're having fun with Aunt N and cousin S today!
